Decorating the house – vocabulary you need to know 🎊 Deck the Halls (with boughs of holly) is a popular Christmas carol which refers to decorating the house at Christmas. During the month of December, many people make their home look as cosy, ‘Christmassy’ and sparkly as possible.

🎄 #Christmas tree – during Christmas, people decorate a tree with colourful ornaments. Pine trees are popular but it is also popular to buy artificial (man-made) trees instead.

🧬 #Tinsel – this is a type of decorative material that is supposed to mimic the effect of ice. Tinsel is wrapped around everything: mainly Christmas trees but also window and picture frames. It’s shiny and colourful.

👼🏻 #Angel – according to Christian beliefs, God chose the Angel Gabriel to deliver the news that Jesus would be born to Mary. That is why many people place a Christmas angel on top of the tree.

⭐️ #Star – sometimes a star replaces the angel on top of the tree. This represents the bright star the Three Wise Men saw on the night Jesus was born.

🌸 #Wreath – this is an assortment of flowers, leaves, fruit, twigs and other natural materials that are shaped together into a ring. This vibrant decoration is then usually hung from the front door.

🧦 #Stockings – these are usually hung by the fireplace on Christmas Eve. Children hope that Father Christmas will fill them with little presents.

🎅🏻 #FatherChristmas – also known as #SantaClaus, Father Christmas is a legendary figure associated with Christmas. He is believed to live in the North Pole with his elves and is said to deliver presents to children across the world on Christmas Eve. He also has a team of reindeer to pull his sleigh, called: Rudolph, Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen.

🎁 #Presents – on Christmas day (and sometimes at midnight on Christmas Eve) people give each other presents to mark the big day. These are usually covered in wrapping paper and tied with a bow.
